All systems go for the opening of the school year, including health measures to protect the scholars and other members of the academic community. The University Health Services (UHS) issued Memo No. M-09-01 on the prevention of communicable diseases.
The measures include: Early Detection of communicable diseases, Health Promotion, and a Preventive Measure thru handwashing techniques.
Part of the steps taken by the UHS include the installation of advisories at comfort rooms around the campus, as well as liquid anti-bacterial soap with dispensers. Infodrive consisting of campus-wide audio-visual broadcast, infobooths at the main lobby manned by OSDS, infosheet/tarps and distribution of brochures about the A(H1N1) virus are among the steps taken by the University.
To further enhance the education of scholars and staff on the A(H1N1) virus, faculty members were oriented on the issues and were assigned to discuss the same with their classes. In the upcoming 44th Foundation Day Anniversary (June 18-19), PLM's chief medical officer is consigned a prime slot to speak on the virus and illness prevention.

INFLUENZA A (H1N1)
Influenza A (H1N1) is caused by a novel flu virus that resulted from the reassortment of 4 virus from pigs, humans and birds. There is no vaccine yet to protect human from this virus. But there are existing and recommended medicines that are effective in treating these Influenza A (H1N1) viruses.
Influenza A (H1N1) is fatal to humans.
Signs and symptoms in humans:
- Similar to the symptoms of regular flu such as:
- Muscle or joint pains
- Lack of appetite
- Sore throat
Mode of Transmission
- Exposure to droplets from the cough and sneeze of the infected person
Influenza A (H1N1) is not transmitted by eating thorough cooked pork
- Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing
- Always wash you hands with soap and water
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers
- Avoid close contact with sick people
- Increase your body’s resistance
- Have at least 8 hours of sleep
- Be physically active
- Manage your stress
- Drink plenty of fluid
- Eat nutritious food
